Why the chain's?
I know exactly what your problem is. Kids always jam on the shifter too hard on those things and it breaks the stop on the end on the shift drum so that it over rotates and will not engage the shift mechanism correctly. Luckily for you its cheap and easy to fix. Leave the motor in the frame, roll it up on the left side, pull the clutch cover (may have to move the brake pedal and undo the footpegs from the bottom of the engine). Once you get the cover off look at the end of the shift drum, there is a small metal piece screwed to the end of it, its probably fractured and this allows the shift drum to turn too far. You have to replace this part, its cheap (going to need another clutch cover gasket too). I do not remember if you have to pull the clutch and gear off to get to this part, if you do there is a special Honda socket that you will need, fortunately they are easy to make.
