All of the motorcycles made today are limited electronically to 186 miles per hour, done voluntarily by the manufacturers over in Europe and Japan. It all started in 2000, when an advertisement in Europe for a Japanese bike was shown flying past a BMW car at a super high rate of speed. This ticked off BMW, who went off on a tirade, claiming how dangerous these motorcycles were becoming, to their governments, and demanded their top speeds be federally regulated. The Japanese got wind (no pun) of this, so they quickly got together with most all of the other bike manufacturers and agreed to self impose their own limits, getting the government off their backs. This was a great idea, in my opinion. Another big plus to this is that any of these electronically limited motorcycles can be "uncorked" by several aftermarket electronic devices, rendering them much faster than if left stock. The last true speed king of speed (and in my opinion, still the pinnacle of graceful performance) is the 1999 Suzuki Hayabusa, which when delivered to the US, had a measured top speed of 199mph. There are several bikes in the last few years that are completely evenly matched if left stock, most of which can do the quarter mile in 9 and a half seconds, at better that 140-150. Top speeds average 180-184mph. Bikes that come to mind are the ninja XZ10, ZX12, the new ZX14 and ZX14 Concourse, the GSXR1000, and still, the GSXR1300R Hayabusa. Yamaha's YZFR1 and Honda's CBR1000RR come REAL close, but no cigar. NO BMWs can hit 180 when left stock. I just read an add in a bike magazine that is claiming to be the new speed king, going a tested 185.5 or so mph, without going over the 186 limit, and that is the 2007 MV Agusta 1000F4. But, that's an EXTREMELY expensive and rare bike. My bike of choice is the ZZR1200, which only does 178. Oh, and, a stock BMW doing an 8 second 1/4 mi? Um, no way. Maybe an 8 second 1/8th mile. Fastest BMW made does a 10.50 quarter mile, as stated right from their own literature. BMWs are great, they're just not top end kings, despite 2 of their models having good power. Sorry.
