You might pop over to http://www.sportbikes.net http://www.sportbikes.ws or http://www.farkledup.com for lots more good information on what bike to get. I'm me on all three sites.
If a motorcycle says manufactured 8/79, is it a 1979 or a 1980?
Not if you don't have a few years of riding under your belt. Big or not, anything with an "R" in the name will be too much for you to handle. That's like asking, "I'm turning 16 and will get my driver's license soon, and I'm a really big kid. Should I look into a Formula 1 car?"Does anyone know what RR stands for on like the honda 989 RR or what GSX_R for suzuki stands for ??
You might want to look into a used BMW or a Suzuki SV650 to start with. They are both twin cylinder engines, and will have more low-end torque. They are also very easy to ride, and will still top 100mph without any effort.
reverse gear in a two wheeler??
You want your first bike, not your last.
