on most dirt bikes and 4 wheelers there is a air hose on the gas cap. make sure it is getting air. My 4 wheeler has a on off valve i am sure you have just a hose. make sure its not clogged.Sounds like the mixture is too lean. There are two screws on the carb. One for idle speed(the one you're probably adjusting), and one for mixture. Turn the mixture screw CCW 1/4 at a time and try to start the bike again. Once you get the bike running, adjust this screw slowly for maximum RPM. If idle gets too high turn down the idle speed screw. The idea is to peak the idle speed with the mixture screw. Adjust to the correct speed with the speed screw.
The problem may have been that the mixture screw may not have been pre-adjusted at the factory. Pre-adjustment is usually as follows: Turn mix-screw CW all the way in gently with a small screwdriver and don't over-tighten,(if its already fully in that's the problem). Then back it out 1 to 1 1/4 turns. Then try the above.
Hope this gets your son on the road!

Check the air filter, then start and let idle for 5-ten mins. if you flood it, tip it all the way to the ground till gas pours from the over flow tube on the carb. it prob nedds to be warmed very long during break in. if you bike is used you are in serious neeed of a new top endWord puzzle... battery location?
i bought my son a 50cc 4 stroke and he had the same problem. finely when it did start it made alot of noise so had to have it fixed. the shop told me he got on it to hard at first he caused the piston ring to disintegrate. they also told me the first tank of gas to take it easy and to buy 93 octane gas.clean out the whole carb including jets. check spark plug if it is fouling out meaning is the bottom full of gunk and is dirty.wen u adjust idle screw barely turn it.if still boggs down check the crank case and piston for deep scratches.oh since it is a 2-stroke dont use the cheap oil use some synthetic motocross oil.... buy the thekind that says SYNTHETIC 2-STROKE MOTOCROSS OIL.
