Old school tradition. You wore the spur on your kickin' leg. Believe it or not, back then, there were no faggy electric starts. If you wanted to ride, you actually had to use some muscle to start your scoot. The spur paid tribute to the outlaws of the old west.

if you look real close, you'll see that many of the spurs you see actually have flat washers attached on the back of them instead of the customary "star". we do this because when we ride thru a tunnel we lightly touch the washers on the pavement causing a shower of sparks. it's pretty cool at night too. illegal but cool.
