I`m sure it would be much safer for bikes to drive on dipped headlights as most car drivers have become complacent when driving and really only look for cars comming up behind, as bikes are faster and more difficult to see, especially in a slow moving motorway situation where they "zig - zag through the traffic.

I don't always ride with high beams but I will do it occasionally if I feel particularly vulnerable. I try not to have them on when I'm in a line of traffic but make better use of my lane in that case (zig zagging back and forth in my lane).

As to why high beams we'll have to go back several years. Back in the 70's it was mandated to have lights on in the US. The idea being that when you're riding around in the daylight hours, you as a car driver, would have your eyes drawn to someone with their lights on (if you've been driving since then you'll remember that when you see that, you'd think the guy forgot to turn their lights off and they're asking for a dead battery).

Anyway, with lights having their lights on all the time in recent years, we, as motorcycle riders, have lost that advantage now. People are starting to not see us again. So folks go with either a modulator, ride with high beams, or ride with the new halogen lights.

Again, it's for visibility. With car drivers being distracted by cell phones, radios, XM radio, palm pilots, blackberries, newspapers, food, etc, we as motorcyclists are in constant danger. If car drivers would do what they're supposed to do; DRIVE THE FLIPPING CAR, we'd all be safer.

Not sure if I totally understand your question. Almost all motorcycles these days have the headlight on went running. Almost all states require that motorcycles drive with their headlight on all the time (helps auto drivers to see us better). If you are referring to high or low beam then the answer might be that a lot of times the motorcycle rider does not know or is not aware that his headlight is on high beam.I drive fast things motorcyles, porsches now the world is in slow motion what do i do?
dipped? dont understand. dont know about everyone else but i keep my high beams on in the daytime. lot easier to see me and wont blind oncoming drivers.Dipped meaning ON!

In the USA they all run with them on, I use the High Beams in the day, just because people here don't pay attention.

its dangerous with light on well that's my opinion riding every day for over 30 year,during the war bombers used to turn lights on during bombing run it was not to see it was to brake the outline of the plane up so if you put lights on it makes you look smaller so drivers under estimate your speed light off they over estimate your speed so don't pull out give you more time.
i ride the same busy route every day ,if i ride with light on or dayglo vest for a week at least 6 cars will cut me up or pull out on me. if i leave light " off " & have black leathers on in a week no one cuts me up or pulls out on me its usualy about one a month, so which is safest?

Running with high beam increases visibility and if the high bulb burns out from use , you can still ride legally at night with the low beam.you've noticed that bikes run with their headlights on.
