Motorcycle insurance?

Question:
What should I be expecting to pay for insurance? I'm single, male, and 23 years old, and I would be getting my first bike. Geico quoted me at about $3360/yr, is this good/bad? Do you think other companies can do better?

What is the cost for a 5 year extended warranty on a V-star 650 Classic Worth?

How much bodily injury coverage should I get?

Answers:

Motor bike?

sounds pretty bad to me since i pay about $50 a year for basic liability coverage. are you asking about bodily injury coverage for yourself - or your passenger? the driver does not get coverage with these policies - only someone you damage. the largest share of the cost is collision coverage and what this premium tells you is that 1 out of 4 single 23 year old males will total their bike every year. the finance companies - of course require collision insurance to protect their collateral. can you any way pay cash for the bike and own it free and clear? if so you should consider liability only coverage and go uninsured for collision loss. this is a great motivator to not wreck your bike and have it be your fault. you can deposit the left over $2000 or so into a bank account and let it grow as your insurance fund. another reason motorcycle collision insurance is so high is that the ins cos do NOT want to repair bikes because they are afraid of the potential liability for repairs. they just total them out - write the check and raise your insurance rate through the roof. then they auction the salvage to someone who repairs the bike for a couple grand and sells it for a big profit. i don't know if this rant helps with your decision or not - but you need to check the cost breakdown of the liability vs collision costs. you need liability - probably legally - to protect anyone you might hit. if you can own the bike and self insure for collision - that is the way to go. i don't know about Geico - but i would expect them to be competitive. you might check Progressive - if it is available in your area.

Geico is usually high. That sounds pretty high. I would try Dairyland Insurance, they are one of the biggest motorcycle insurance companies and have good rates.

On motorcycles, why do only one of the headlights come on?

$3360 seems extremely high even for Geico, I got full Coverage on two bikes and Geico charges 185 per year. Your age does have a effect on the price as well as the type bike you are riding. High speed sport bike tend to be higher than cruisers. Maybe you should consider staying away from crotch rockets especially if you have a history of tickets or other driving violations. At 23 years old, $3360 is way too much for a safe driver, I checked with my agent and she said you probably meant $336 which is about what you should pay for full coverage with a completion of a safety course and a good driving history. Every situation is different. Credit history also plays a part in it. Shop around.

Buy motorcycles?

The insurance rates depend a lot on the typeof motorcycle you ride. For example, when I was 24 years old my Kawasaki KLR650 was about $225 per year through Progressive (for liability only). I would at least check with Progressive because they are often cheaper.

How do you know for sure if a 2 stroke bike...?

I have a 1985 Yamaha Virago 700, insured through Progressive, minimum legal coverage for California. I am 47 years old. I have been insured with Progressive for, I think, 12 years. My coverage is $75/year.

Do Harley's use Imperial (English) threads? Or are they metric too?

Whoa! Is that typo on the price? I have two bikes covered with Geico with full coverage for $185 a year. Granted I,ve been riding for over 25 years, and have had a motorcycle safety course. But sounds like your bike is made of platinum! That's defiantly high. I would shop elsewhere if that isn't a typo!
