Question:
Looking to buy a bike, but what's the pro's and con's of one with a carb vs fuel injection? Is it the same case as cars?
Answers:
What are the factors to consider in buying a motorcycle?
Carb - if not properly maintained (as in winter storage preparation), you'll be paying up to $150 every spring to get them cleaned.A little bit of dirt or rust in the fuel tank, can cause the carbs to leak. Another expensive rebuild.
FI - you won't have those problems.
Carb - as the motor wears out (piston & rings and valves), the carbs will need constant adjusting to compensate for the changes in engine performance.
Fi - automaticaly adjusts itself with computer controlled sensors.
Fi - it's main problem is that it's electronicaly controlled. So many components rely on each other to send the correct info to the computer. If / when something goes bad, it will be expensive to diagnose and if the computer were to go bad = $800 +
Fi - you'll get better performance. When tuning, set it and forget it for the life time of the bike. Or until you add another performance part.
You have to weigh the good against the bad:
Fi - performance, low maintenance, can be costly in the long run.
Carb - lower performance, dependable, need frequint adjustments, simpler to diagnose problems, harder to adjust for optimum performance
