Unless your reasons for the 250 are based on insurance costs, gov.t legislation or just budget, why not find a decent Kaw. EX500 Ninja, or Suzuki GS550?
Better power/everything over the 250. That way, when you step up to something else, you are already closer to the new bike in terms of what to expect in power delivery, weight, handling.
The 250 will do take you around the city, but the 500 range will introduce you to highway travel, distance touring, power and torque. You want to learn, give yourself the proper tools to advance your skills.
And drive like everyone will turn into your lane without looking!!
