Question:
I have an 84 harley softail with a shovel 4-speed, using a wet clutch. I snap cables from time to time and have replaced just about everything in the tranny and clutch except the shift rod, spring diaphram and adjustment plate. They all seems fine, no damage. Has anyone had this same problem? and how did you fix it?

The first answer is good so I can only add the suggestion of purchasing a heavy duty cable from the Barnett company, they will custom make them to your spec if need be and they are resonably priced and should last for a long time.i have had similar problems on my bike (not a harley). the routing of my clutch cable is a little close to the exhaust, so it gets quite warm. solved that one by prelubing the cable with a high temperature antisieze grease. there was also a later issue with the new aftermarket clutch with (1 extra) kevlar plates and stiffer and longer springs on the basket. the best way to keep your cable happy is with lots of lube. if you don't have the heat issue that i do, then chainlube works pretty well inside a cable. best done with the cable off, hanging vertically overnight to let all the lube get to the bottom. messy, but very effective.
you don't say where the cable is breaking, but another thing to consider is that using an aftermarket brake lever may not have the same "cam" design as the original, and could be putting too much strain on the ball end around too tight of a bend.
