What could be the noise in my motorcycle engine??

Question:
i have a little 90cc dirtbike and there is like a little rattling noise in the engine ... what could it be? could it be the spark plug that is doing that?? or is it something more major like a valve??.. if its a piston like around how much would it be for fixing??thanks

the rattling you hear in your bike could be a few different things,
1. Piston slap, this occurs when the bore of the cylinder in no longer perfectly round. this is very common with older bikes that heave not been rebuilt in a while. easy fix, tear bike down, get cylinder mic'ed to see what size piston you will need, and buy a new one, have the cylinder bored, and put it all back together.
this costs approx $200

2. Rod bearing, if you have a rod going out, you HAVE to get it fixed, and these are not all that cheap. You will have to take it to a pro mechanic to have the cases split, crank removed, rebuilt, trued, and reinstalled. this takes special tools to do, so dont even try it on your own, plus you still have to do the top end as mentioned in #1. This costs approx $200 in labor, plus parts.

Can anyone tell me where to find a good salvage yard to buy a rebuildable sport bike. I am in NC?

3. loose engine mounts or bolts, check and tighten all bolts near and on the engine to factory torque specifications. This one is free, if you have a torque wrench.

It always helps when you give make model and year.
The first answer gave you some clues, I'll just add that if its a four stroke overhead cam engine it may well be a loose timing chain.
Some bikes have automatic adjusters, and others have manual adjusters that you have to set.
Your going to have to do a little looking into the problem, is there a dealer nearby, or can you get access to a manual?
