I do not want to repaint. I bought this tank to replace my rusty old one, but that one had been professionally repainted 10 years ago, and has no decals, as does the rest of my bike. Thanks.

Don't use a heat gun you'll end up burning the tank.You can try a blow dryer and a thumbnail or a guitar pick. You may have to go to extreems,some decals are tough,as a last resort 800-1000 grit wet sandpaper and rubbing compound can be used.Its a bit risky ,but if there is enough paint and you're careful you can do it.Which motor oil should I use for my motorbike?

If the decals were put on and have clear coat over the top, you won't get them off without having to at least repaint some clear coat. Otherwise, try soaking it in hot water with a little dawn. If they have been on that long the paint will be different under the decal. You are going to have a rough time getting all of the sticky mess off if they do come off without damaging the paint. go to your local auto paint store and ask for a rubber wheel to remove pin strip. Attach it to a drill and go to work, it will not damage paint.Which is the best raincoat for a bike rider to use, any particular brand or model?

What ever procedure you use, the paint on a gas tank from 1988 will be faded a little. When you remove the sticker, the paint under the sticker will look brand new (because it's been protected from the elements).
