Well, if there is no other way to adjust the chain, then maybe removing one link at a time until you have the desired length is what you may have to do......

how bad is it for a motorcycle to be dropped?

Normally, you undo the nut securing the back wheel. Then there are little nuts at the end of the swingarm to tighten to draw the wheel back. Then tighten the wheel nuts again. Try and do it equally on both sides so the wheel ends up properly aligned.
There should be half an inch of movement in the chain when you press it down.
