Question:
I'm trying to fix a little yamaha 50 dirt bike for my nephew. heres the problem.. i set it to start and kick it over a few times and it starts up. i have to keep the throttle maxed out to keep it running but even then it idles up and down strangely like it revs up then dies and just before it stops completely it will catch again and rev up and repeat. this will go on for about 2 minutes then it will die and be next to impossible to start for an hour or so. any ideas?

EFI Download for new exhaust and air cleaner?
You might try an oil change the bottom end might be loaded up with fuel causing the plug to foul or the exhaust could be loaded up with old oil and fuel it could be a dirty carb or a fouled spark plug if the carb is clean and you have a new plug in it it could be time for a top end rebuild the way to check tkat would to be pull the head than the jug than pull a ring off the piston slip it into the jug and see how big or small the gap is or it could be main bearings and seals since a two stroke works off of the suction in the bottom end you can check this by pulling off the left sidecover and pulling your magneto behind there you will see a seal spray soapy water on the seal and kick it over and if it sucks the soluton up that might be the problem. Hope that helps you.clean the carb!! clean the needle jet, the main jet, and the choke valve, put fresh gas in it, and a new spark plug. check the throttle slide as well, it may be sticking as well, lube the throttle cable too.
I know on those PW 50's that they have a throttle control, release it all the way so you are able to open the throttle all the way, and retry it.
