that's a very broad question... there are many different types of motorcycles. take a look at a suzuki gsxr 600, you might be able to find an older one in decent shape for $3500We need to know what you have in mind. If you're looking for a cruiser then Honda Shadow's are great reliable bikes.

Well Dan K all I have to say is just do it. I am a member of a Tennessee chapter of a motorcycle club and have a great time riding. I wouldn't want you to wait another minute. You should pick up a wheels and deals catalog and you can find alot of good bikes for that price. I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan. It is a wonderful bike, nimble, rides great, looks good and cost very little. It also has low mantinence and virtually trouble free. Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? I recommend taking a motorcycle safety course first just to make sure it's something you really want to do. Besides that it's a good investment as you will get a discount for bike insurance once you have taken the class; so it pays for itself in the long run.As for what kind of bike, that's hard to say. Buells are great bikes in my opinion, I like my Sporty, and I've also had a Kawi. which was very reliable. You should be able to find a used bike for $3000 easily, you just have to decide which type suits you best. Good luck to you:)
First thing you need to do is decide what type of bike you are wanting. Crotch rocket or cruiser. Personally I love vulcans and for the price range you set you should be able to find one about 7 years old or so. I ride an 800 for in town, I taught my father on that bike, its an easy bike to learn on.

Depends on what sort of motorcycle you want - besides the most often seen cruisers and sport bikes, there's also dual sports and standards. Dual sports are sort of like big street legal dirt bikes, and standards are sort of like sport bikes with a more relaxed riding posture and less plastic.I would say to look for something that has 50 hp or less, as these will be a lot more forgiving and predictable for someone learning to ride. You'll also want to get one that is light enough that you can pick it up if you drop it, and that you feel comfortable sitting on. There's plenty of choices out there.
For someone of your size, I'd say to look at a 600 to 800 cc cruiser, a 500 cc or smaller sport bike or standard, or a 650 cc dual sport. I'm 6'2", a little heavier than you, and I ride a Suzuki GS500F sportbike that I'd say is a good choice for a beginning rider.
