How easy is it to learn and be good at shifting an ATV?

getting one for christmas and need to hang with an outlaw and raptor and a couple of 4x4 a week after i get it and i want to get a manual but never used one car or bike

its very easy. i have a suzuki z400 sport atv. 1st gear you press down with your foot on the shift lever while holding in the clutch. When you want to start moving, just give it a little gas and ease out on the clutch lever (left hand) 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear, you push up with your foot on the shifter. Pull the clutch in while letting out on the gas, shift up, then let out on the clutch while getting back onto the gas. once you are moving, this can all be done very quickly. its alot of fun. wheelies, burnouts etc. enjoy. you will love it

Put the front tires flush against a solid wall. Depress the clutch and put it in first. Slowly release the clutch, listen and feel the engine note change and the the clutch starts to grab. Practice releasing the clutch the friction point and then back, try not to stall it. You should quickly get a feel for how to work the clutch. 1st gear is the only really challenging one anyway.

After you learn how, which isn't hard, you will need some practice to get good. Your friends should know you are new at this and help you keep up. You don't want to trash your new toy a week after you get it. Hang with them - ok. Play with them - ok. Race them? NO. Maybe after a couple months, when it's broken in and you are too.
