My wife and son visited a Harley dealer the other day that didn't have any in stock. The dealer said that they were a piece of crap and didn't recommend them. Could it be that he just wanted to try to sell them a more expensive bike? Or is the dealer being honest?

For it's size the Buell blast is a good value, it is hella fast for a 500cc bike, handles well, and will not break your pocket book.Of course they are trying to get you to buy a more expensive bike, although no dealer should say his product is a "piece of crap". You might want to send this guy's name to Harley Davidson and let them know.

1. Size, if you are the main driver, this bike is kind of small, and if you are 6' tall, it might feel small for you. If you are limber and don't want to drive to Sturgis with it, then you might be ok, slightly. It would likely fit your wife or son, under the same criteria.

2. Power: Do not underestimate this bike, it is not necessarily a "beginner" bike. It has a lot of power for a 500cc motorcycle, and a few people have gotten into trouble by not being used to it's ability to take off like a banshee. If you goose the throttle and drop the clutch, you might very likely crash into the side of your garage. Factor this in.
3. As far as the quality of this bike versus say, an 883 Harley Sportster, the sportster is a nice bike. It is still a bit of a small bike, but is not AS small as the Blast. It will have good power, but it will be delivered more smoothly, and you could comfortably ride 2-up unless you are larger (heavier or taller) people.
4. If you ARE bigger people, then consider the Softail Standard, if you can afford it. It is a great bike (I have one) and runs like a swiss watch with the balanced twin cam motor.

They are a fun little bike being a one cylinder and all. I wouldnt say that they are a POS but the dealer probably wants to go from a $4500 blast to an $11000 firebolt. If you want a little around the block cruiser its a great little bike, its even fun if you put a dirt tire on the back and take it off road.

I was actually considering one a couple years back. I did some searching on the internet and found several posts and articles that basically said it wasn't a very good bike. I'm sorry but I don't remember the exact details. It was enough to change my mind though. There are much better Japanese bikes out there for the money.It's really not a great bike in terms of reliability... but no Harley is. Sorry to all the Harley fans... not trying to be offensive, just speaking the truth.
It's a small, underpowered bike that will be very cramped if you are over 5'8.
If you want something similar to that bike, go with a Suzuki SV650 or Honda 599. Much more capable and reliable bikes.
Lots and lots and lots of cheaper plastic on the blast. Look at some motorcycle safety courses that Harley provides, the students use buells, not just because they are smaller, it's because they are cheap.
