A jet kit is only necessary for a few reasons
1. You are going to be in a dramatically higher or lower (relative to sea level) climate. If you are travelling and passing through it will be OK.
2. You have changed the AIR CLEANER ELEMENT to a higher flow. This allows in more air, therefore the bike will be running lean (bad). Pipes make almost no difference to carb. performance and functionality.
3. Engine mods (cams, heads, larger bore, etc) again, lean is bad for an engine.

If it is an 883 the best bang for the buck is have your cylinders machined to 1200cc by a good machine shop, put some good Wiseco, S&S, KB, etc. pistons in it (9.5:1 compression is a good streetable number), get some Andrews N2 cams, a good set of pipes (not drags, a 2 into 1 makes the best power in the most useable place) rejet to a 180 main, ride it 1000 or so miles, and check your plugs.
white=lean, go to a 185 jet
black=rich, try a 175
caramel color is spot on... elevation makes a difference in jetting, so you may need to try a few combinations.
don't waste a lot of money on kits though, just buy the jets for a few bucks apiece.
