Assuming both bikes were kept in a garage and well-maintained along the way, both sound like fair deals.

I still have my 1996 Shadow VLX that I use for major city driving. Mostly, I used it to commute to work and for errands. But, I've also taken it on dozens of roadtrips in the 100-400 mile range. Not the most comfortable bike for long roadtrips, but the engine can handle it ok. Get a throttle rocker for the roadtrips so that your right hand doesn't cramp up.
Just purchased a 1983 Gold Wing Interstate. Do I need to run lead substitute or high octane fuel?
The bike has over 48k miles and still runs like new. All I've done is regular oil changes and tune-ups. Had to replace the battery once, brakes & clutch once (all that city driving), and tires twice. That's it. An extremely reliable bike. I recommend the Shadow VLX to anybody who wants a mid-size cruiser.

I own a 2003 v* 1100 clasic. My first ride was a yamaha maxim 750. for buzzing around town the 750 was great. But once I got the 1100 I never looked back. Its not as nimble but I didnt want a rice burnner anyway. I'm 5'11 250lbs and the v* is perfect. You can get a very nice ride off ebay. mine had 3000mi and paid $5500. Also since you use to ride I think it should be know prob to jump back in the saddle. good luck.Would a Kawasaki Ninja zx-6r be too powerful for a first bike?
The single cylinder motorcycle I had (XL350) made a lot of vibration, enough so I'd be exhausted after only a short ride.Where can I get a test ride, in the Los Angeles area?
I don't have any direct experience with either of these motorcycles; I ride a Yamaha Virago 700, which is probably more like the Shadow. See if you can get a test ride on them, to see which you'd favor. If you find the 'Zuke vibrates too much, don't get it!

I own a VLX that I traded a Savage (S40) for in 1995. I think you will enjoy riding the VLX, more.I have an '04 Savage myself (same as s40)..not feeling like I've outgrown it but browsing for something larger...you may find it a little small, seems like the Shadow would be a better fit for you. Have done 300+ mile days on a Savage, that's about it's comfort limit, I find. But a very fun and reliable bike, and given your 2 choices, I would think that the S40 to be the better overall deal. Good luck!
