Why does my Kawasaki Z650 not rev above 5000RPM?

Question:
Whem I'm driving along the bike revs well up to 5 then i can feel the engine slow down. Why would this be? Someone mentioned the points may need relaced?

Well it could be a lot of things...you need to be systematic and logical and eliminate them one by one.
You dont mention whether there are any other symptoms like smoke or lack of torque.

Firstly check whether it will rev above 5k when unloaded..ie in nuetral.
Does a Z650 have points? If so yes check them.
Can you borrow a timing light from a garage?
This is a strobe light you simply click to a plug lead. You shine it at the rotating shaft where hopefully there are timing marks...

Stainless steel bolts will they stretch with heat in say a engine sump or other high heat areas?

Are all Cylinders firing? You can check by carefully feeling the exhaust pipes...
If one is not..check plug, spark, fuel, compression...
