i have 12 v at the coils and checked w ohmmeter any ideas what i missed or what else 2 check??please help it is driveing me crazy

If I remember correctly (had one in 78, great bike, same problem) it has points. If it hasn't been done already I would covert to something like a Dyna ignition.If it is points check the lowly condensor. This has caused more than one bike to fail and they don't cost squat. On these older (feels bones creek) bikes the coils and condensors will often interchange and even some auto parts may work (used a Fiat condensor to fix a Harley once). Make sure the parts are installed correctly, check plugs, .. if all else fail make sure you have gas in the Kawa...Check the point gap under the left crank cover.Gap to 13 thou. If you do have a CDI ignition make sure you hook it to the negative side of the coil or you will burn it up,Ting.Make sure the kill switch is off.Make sure the coil grounds are correct and with key on do you have 12 volts at the primary circuit of the coil.

All 1978 models had points. If you have an igniter then you must have a later model. On TCBI (non-point) models you have a stator plate with two coils located under the right side engine cover, a control box (like an igniter) under the left side panel and the two coils mounted under the fuel tank.The stator coils were the weakest of the items but normaly only one will go bad so you will still have spark on two cylinders. The connector can get corrosion and you will not have spark on either coil. I have seen this many times.

The ground inside the igniter box will often fail and you can test this by just hooking a ground wire from the frame to the box. Many times they will run years with this fix. The coil ground wires may also be bad under the fuel tank.

Perhaps your ground wire from the motor to chassis is bad? This can cause problems.
If I knew how your ignition burned up I could be of more help to you. If you pull the right engine cover off and find points, well there you go. If that's the case I don't know who sold you an igniter, but they are one heck of a salesman.

When fixing ignition problems you should always start at the bottom and work your way up. It's cheaper and faster. If you have more info you can e-mail me and I'll walk you through the fix.
