So...
Start the bike, get on, and squeeze the clutch. Step down on the shifter to get to 1st gear. Give it some gas and ever so slowly release the clutch lever until you feel the bike trying to move. Give it a little more gas and (still ever so slowly) release the clutch lever until the bike starts moving. Practice this till you are comfortable starting up.

Now, when you've got the startup mastered, get up some speed and squeeze the clutch while letting off the gas at the same time. Then stick your toe under the shift lever and move the shift lever up into 2nd gear (if it goes back into neutral, kick it up again...it shouldn't do this, but I've had a couple of bikes that had that problem). Give it some gas (not a lot) and let off the clutch lever at the same time. As you go faster and faster, you will use this same process to change to 3rd and 4th gear.

The answers above pretty much explain what to do. The trick is figuring out how much throttle to use when taking off. Shifting is a piece of cake so don't worry about that too much at first. To begin with keep practicing your take off. It is better to give it too little gas than too much when you are learning. The KX85 is a lot of bike to learn how to ride on but you will figure it out. I taught my 10 year old nephew how to ride and shift gears in about 30 minutes. Also you said it was 1 down and 3 up. A KX85 should have 6 gears, 1 down and 5 up. Good luck and have fun.
