I have a 83 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim and so far I haven't found anything off the shelf that will bolt right on with the stock headers and stock hanger brackets. I did find out that my wife's Cobra pipes off her 99 VStar will fit my bike, but in order to get them to "hang" on the bike I would need to do mods on the brackets to have them look right. They did change the sound, but I also found out that if you change from stock to custom or you mod your stock pipes, you'll need to resync your carbs, otherwise you'll get a lot of backfiring and the engine will run rough.

pull the baffle out of the exhaust pipe and cut off part of the baffle with the hacksaw then put it back in. Poor boy drag pipes

Break open that tight anal port and get some exhaust pipes.
They cost less than 300 bucks and work.
You may have to look around since your bike is so old, but they are out there.
If you are one step above moron and have a few tools, you can do it yourself.
BIG TIP. Start spraying WD-40 or and rust busting agent on the bolts a few days before you start working on removing parts.
