Cdi unit or regulater/rectifier? (motorcycle)?

Question:
the rev counter starts having a fit up and down jumping between 3000 and 7000 revs, it feels like an electrical problem rather than fuel, its done it three times now about a week apart, at first i put it down to the cold then it did it after a ride out for a while, i put new plugs in last week but its done it again today, any ideas?
the thing is if i take it in theres nothing wrong with it so until it dies completely i'm stuffed !

It sounds like it could be the CDI unit, but just to cover all the bases, did you gap the plugs? If they're gapped too wide, it'll be harder for the ignition to jump the gap and make a spark, particularly when it's damp, cold, or really hot. The way the tach is jumping around sure seems like a spark problem, I'd agree.
Even if the plugs are gapped too wide, you could try closing up the gap a little bit to narrow it down to a spark problem. If you're thinking it's a regulator or rectifier problem with the charging system, wouldn't that show up on the voltmeter? And that wouldn't be just an isolated little glitch while you're riding, would it? I would think that system just maintains the amount of juice going into the battery, and if it were to have a glitch I wouldn't think it'd show up in the spark suddenly. It sure sounds like an ignition problem to me.

What are the rules on riding a motorbike in the uk at the age of 18. What cc are you aloud or bhp.?

What's the bike? On a lot of modern bikes, if there is a fault with the electrics it is diagnosed by the ECU and shown on the rev counter by the needle pointing to certain numbers. You need to see a service agent or dealer for the kind of motorcycle you have.
