1.Clean the painted surface w/ tack cloth, remove all wax,dirt.
2.Tape off the area tobe gold leafed.
3.Apply size-clear to painted surface, let it dry, until tacky to the touch, use the knuckle on your index finger to test how tacky it is.
4.Apply the gold leaf, in a shop where their is no wind or moisture.
5.Let dry four hours.
6.you can use a slow speed drill w/ large rubber pad on it, if you want the round swirle look.
7.Clear coat or leave it w/out.

Basically you (may have to key it with emery paper first) then apply gold size, then the leaf and then protect it with varnish

The cheapest way is to make the gold leaf yourself. First, get some gold seeds. Plant them where they will be in full sun and water lightly. When leaves first appear, cut them back for the first week or so. This will make the leaves bigger and more vibrant. When they are as big as the palm of your hand it is time to harvest them. Dry them hanging upside down in a shady place. When the edges turn up it they are ready to apply. Just moisten the surface and rub them on. Good luck!
