You should try to lock the bike to something, run the chain through the frame if you can, otherwise the swingarm and rear wheel. Have a two-way paging alarm, put the bike into a enclosed garage, cover it, and block it in with some cars. Even all of that isnt foolproof however... full coverage insurance is a good idea if you are worried about theft!
I'm 30 somethink and want to take my bike test?
Lock it - lock the steering and the ignition. OR...Some come with Alarm systems. OR...Take off the spark plug wire (not the spark lug - just pull the wire off and let it hang)...most thiefs woun;t know why it wount start and wount stick around to try and fix it. OR...if it's kickstart take the kicker petal with you. OR...you can get a lock to clip onto your disk brake that will not alow the bike to move. You can search for them on J & P cycles or Drag Specialties websites...Generally, I never experinced a thief or know of someone trying to take my bike...so the lock on the steering and the ignition lock were sufficiant for me. Plus, I park it at night in my garage.
I've left my helmet on the bike, jacket in the saddlebags and nobody's ever messed with either...(knock on wood)...maybe I've ben lucky or maybe people aren't that desperate to steal around here...or maybe I just didn't run into a thief yet.
Large Chain with the bolt cutter proof type padlock . You can slip an old inner tube over the chain so it doesn't scratch. Lock the bike to something a pole another bike etc.
There are cables with a motion sensor alarm on them.
Never get lazy ,always lock it, I've had 2 bikes stolen the last worth about 30,000 dollars it is heart breaking.
There is now Lojack(tracking system) for motorcycles, but I'd guess you're in England ( Motorbike), don't know if you've got it there.

Harleys are a huge target. Professional thieves now drive around in cube style vans. They have a sliding trolley hoist that comes out the back of the van. They back up to the bike, slide out the hoist, hook it to the bike, raise it, and slide it into the van. This process takes less than 60 seconds.

That said, locking your bike isn't going to help much, although I still recommend you do so. It will deter someone just driving off with it.

If it is a bike that some one wants their is little you can do to stop someone from taking it. Use chains, locks, alarms, and everything you can think of. Best to keep it out of sight. ALWAYS CARRY A SHACKLE WITH YOUTriumph Bonneville or Kawasaki W650? Why?
i had a motorbike that i left outside work one day. came out to go home...no bike!
i had only locked it with the steering lock and a disc lock
police said tthey just dragged it into the back of a van...you could see scratches and tyre marks on the road.
i didnt see it again. but now i have a bandit so i dont miss it ;)
but i learned from my mistake
now if there is somewhere i go to a lot, i leave a shackle there all the time, so ive always got somewhere secure to leave it. i carry a lump of keys- but its worth it-trust me.
Why doesn't my pocket bike start on the first pull?

You can try many different ways to stop a thief that may or may not work. My simple answer to that question is to have theft insurance.
