Love it love it love it. But I love the Cherohala Skyway even more, and there are some awesome roads in eastern, Tn as well. U.S. 421 from Boone, NC. to Bristol, Tn is a great ride too. Can't forget the Blue Ridge Parkway either.What is a 2005 BMW f650gs worth with 9700 miles on it. good cond.?
Near death experiences? No, thankfully. But it can happen on the Dragon. So many people riding/driving over their heads that lane violations are all too common.

No near death encounters,but it all depends on how you ride. If you are a serious Adrenalin junky ,the dragon is the place to push the limits. or if you just want to have a good ride,it's a great place to just see some beautiful scenery, and meet a bunch of scooter riders. while your there check out the Cherohalla Sky way, and the Blue ridge parkway. There is a reason Deal's Gap is the most popular motorcycle road in the country. You have to experience it to believe it.I've never actually seen any accidents there, but the "Tree of Shame" stands as testament to countless rider errors.
It's really not a good ride for Harleys or harley style bikes. I have a 2002 lowrider and it drags on the many curves if I try to drive above 35.I thinks thats why they call it the dragon, because your bike will be dragging the whole way through lol. Its just a constant shift up and down and on and off the brakes. Not my favorite type of riding. The best part of the ride is once you get past the dragon, if you are coming from Tennessee. You can ride up to fontanna dam or up through the mountains towards Cherokee NC. By the way, sometimes they have camera people set up along the dragon who take your picture. They have a sign of a website you can check out and find the picture of you riding through. I thought it was kind of a cool idea. They sale the pictures of course.

Ridden there for years - since the early 1980s, when it was only known as Hwy 129. It is a very technical piece of road, with very few entrances and driveways - that is what makes it unique to other roads in the area. I actually don't enjoy riding it over and over again, because it can take a lot out of you. With all the switchbacks and tight turns, you have to be completely focused on the road 100% of the time, or it will bite you. Also, the squid factor has gotten pretty high there - people crossing the center line, and riding way beyond their abilities. Most of the crashes there are single vehicle - riding beyond their ability. A lot of people treat it as a closed course - better to take that stuff to a track day!There are tons of other great roads in the area - be sure to take Hwy 28 over to Franklin, the Cherohala Skyway, Wayah Mountain Road out of the Nantahala Gorge.
