Carry a GPS locator...or even a cell phone, which can be used to triangulate your position from the cell towers. As for the GPS locators, check with the skiing websites (example: http://www.rei.com/ski/toc/avalanche+saf... , as many of them have them for sale to use in the event of an avalanche. If you are wearing one, and don't show up at home by, say midnight, your family could then contact the appropriate emergency service to have them search out your signal. As for the Cell phone, you'd need to be conscious to use it, in most cases...or someone would have to keep calling you...but, in any event, it IS a possible tool for locating you. First off, if you haven't done so, take the MSF course. Believe me it really makes a difference in your riding skills. Always have your safety equipment on, including a "new" helmet. Make sure your bike is in great shape and make sure that several people know where you are riding and the approximately how long you will be gone. I would try to ride in places where I have cell phone coverage...a gps is nice, but not necessary. It would depend on how far off-road you are traveling and if you are familiar with the terrain. Take it slow and don't rush it. May I suggest searching for riding clubs in your area? You may find more people in the same shoes, great way to make new friends too! I might also suggest that you post something on your car/truck before you take off riding...sorta like the hikers did in Colorado). Carrying a GPS device and/or cell phone would be beneficial. The most important thing you can do is to notify someone close to you before you go out riding.family, friends, neighbors..make arrangements with whomever you chose that you will contact them upon return and if they don't hear from you then they need to contact police and to search for you in an area you designate. Just be safe man, I ride alone too at times and I don't like it for the same fears you have.
