There is no need to stop to cool down with an air cooled engine.Quite the opposite. It is the airflow generated by movement that cools the engine. Extended idling, or sitting in a major traffic jam could cause problems.
i ride an air cooled bike, and i can tell u with 100% certainty that it will go as far as he can sit in the saddle. they're cooled somewhat by oil also, but air is the main coolant. the 2 hardest things on an air-cooled bike is: being in parades, and being stuck on a freeway on a 95+ degree day bumper to bumper.
You shouldnt have to worry about it. You can ride 100's and 100's of miles and not a problem. Ive had so many trail bikes and a 125 trail bike just like your sons and you have to worry about running out of gas way before over heating anything.

Had mostly air cooled bikes myself. If it over heats the engine will just stop and not restart until it has cooled down.
But it depends on the ambient temperature, how hard he rides it etc.
