What is exhaust wrap made of?

His bottom will need to cool off before his bike will. As long as you change the oil and maintain it a Honda will run simply forever. The reason people sell them is they get tired of looking at them and decide to get a new one.. They don't wear out if properly maintained and as the other writers said, the more you drive, the more air cools the engine.

They are designed to be cooled by air moving over the cylinders. You can drive 100's of KM and not have to let the bike cool down. Sitting at a stand still in traffic on a very very hot day. For a long period of time. May cause some harm, its not likely

There is no need to stop to cool down with an air cooled engine.
Quite the opposite. It is the airflow generated by movement that cools the engine. Extended idling, or sitting in a major traffic jam could cause problems.

Kickstarting a motorcycle.?

i ride an air cooled bike, and i can tell u with 100% certainty that it will go as far as he can sit in the saddle. they're cooled somewhat by oil also, but air is the main coolant. the 2 hardest things on an air-cooled bike is: being in parades, and being stuck on a freeway on a 95+ degree day bumper to bumper.

Son wants his first motorcyle a 1980 850 yamaha for 500.00. is this a good deal? it is in immaculate condition

You shouldnt have to worry about it. You can ride 100's and 100's of miles and not a problem. Ive had so many trail bikes and a 125 trail bike just like your sons and you have to worry about running out of gas way before over heating anything.
hope i could help.

Anyone for taking a pillion on a motor bike ride in North West London?

If Ewan McGregor can ride an air cooled bike around the world, your son should have no problems! - an air cooled bike will run as long as you need it too - the only problem is being stationary for a long time in VERY hot weather

The engine can run all day without stopping, he will however need to stop about every 100 miles or so to massage some life back into his bum cheeks!

Trust me doing this sort of distance on a small bike is not comfortable, I would recommend he looks at getting a gel pad or air filled seat cover to make it a bit more comfortable for himself.

Had mostly air cooled bikes myself. If it over heats the engine will just stop and not restart until it has cooled down.
