What is the normal idle speed for a 1982 Yamaha 400 X(?) Special?

Question:
It's my friend's bike. I don't know if it's a 2 stroke or 4. He says it seems to be idling high. I think he said 1200. I seem to recall my 2002 750cc Honda Shadow idling at about 800-1000. Do older bikes idle higher than the newer ones?

That bike is a 4 stroke.
Older bikes needed the idle set higher then today's bikes. 1200 rpm is about right.
It's better for an engine to idle faster rather than slower. If the idle is to low, the engine will be struggling to stay running and putting unnecessary strain and ware on moving parts.

82 XS400s tended to be set a little high because they leaned them out so much to meat new emissions standards they didn't idle real smooth. People also set the idle that high on them to keep them from popping when you let off the throttle and used compression braking.
