my boyfriends Yamaha R6 YZF had the steering lock smashed in last night in an attempt to be stolen (luckily they failed) and i was wondering, for both of our safety, how safe it will be to ride now the lock has been effectively rendered useless? i dont really know much about motorbikes, and i cant find any info on the net to help, so if anyone has any advice or knowledge about this specific problem, please help me! i understand in order to fix the bike, it will be expenive and time consuming, and considering it is his only mode of transport, that will be, for the time being, out of the question. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

my honda cbr600rr had the same done to it and i spoke to honda and had them check it over before i rode it again.. don't take the risk imagine at a ton plus and the steering locks... curtains... seek professional advice from yamaha.it shouldn't be expensive for yamaha to give it the once over but it will be expensive for your boyfriend he could pay with his life... don't contact insurance as this will be no claims down the pan and that will be expensive.
If the bike is insured fully comprehensive then the expense is not really an issue. It should be possible to hire a bike while the Yam is off the road and add that to the bill. Smashing the steering lock off of the machine may have done other damage which can't be detected without specialised equipment. An R6 has a fair amount of "welly" under acceleration and braking and there is no telling what strains it would put on the damaged part. Personally for safety's sake I'd take the bus for a while 'til it's sorted.

IT DEPENDS ??IF THE MECHANISM WAS NOT TOO BADLY DAMAGED(I.E. - YOU USED THE KEY TO UNLOCK IT ) IT WOULD BE RELATIVELY SAFE TO RIDE ! IF THE LOCK MECHANISM IS DAMAGED BADLY, THEN YOU CAN ALSO DROP THE FORKS AND REMOVE THE LOCK MECHANISM UNTIL YOU CAN AFFORD TO REPLACE IT.
my KLR650 has a broken steering lock. When you turn the key to "lock" nothing happens but it will still lock if you put it in "park"
I took it to a authorized repair shop and they said the whole ignition unit would have to be replaced and it would be $250+ and my ignition key wouldn't match my gas tank key. They said there was no danger of locking up while riding so I decided not to fix it. I've been riding it like that for over a year and haven't had any problems.

On my bike, I was told there is basically a plunger that when locked slides into a hole, preventing the forks from turning (like a deadbolt sliding into a door frame). That plunger sheered off so it won't lock - intentionally or unintentionally. Plus, if the key is in the "on" position, there would be no reason for it to lock anyway.
the best bet is just to remove the steering lock and use a different method or securing the bike! if u ride it while its damaged it might lock as your riding and that could risk your lives and others on the road! it should be easy enough to remove most of them are just screwed in place!!!

If the lock is loose, or the pin is hanging out and seems to be in risk of jamming the steering, take it off and replace it. Also there is the risk that if you get to your place of destination that the lock may complettly jam up. Or the ignition side could be damaged and could short out causing a nice smoke show!.
