measure the diameter at the threads, then count the threads per inch, if it is standard, if it is metric, then measure the distance between threads. Example, if it is standard, and it measures 5/8" diameter, and has 11 threads per inch, it would be a 5/8 - 11.
If metric, and it was 12mm and threads were 1.25 mm apart. It would be a 12 x 1.25 nut. Also you could take your axle to where you are buying a nut to match them up. Always use a new cotter pin, this will keep you from loseing the nut.
