Is there a way to tell whether or not an engine will turn over without having a kicks start/electric starter?

Question:
Well, I was just offered a slew of parts bikes (all Honda, btw), 3 of them not much more than gas tanks and frames but one of them was an '82 CB500 that looks like its all there and also another 500 that does have the engine and a good bit of parts but is a total basket case. Before I start wheelin' and dealin' with this fellow theres something I hope you guys might help me with, and I guess it's just the question in my subject heading. I know if you've got a kick start you can tell right of if the thing'll turn over, but if it has only an electric start is there anything I can wrench on and find out that way?

What do you think of the suzuki 650 V-Storm?

I was going to tell you how to put a wrench on it, then was going to say RP's idea was better (no tools required). I started thinking instead of blabbing. If it has been sitting, there is a chance of breaking a ring. No oil up there, and might be a little sticky. If you pull the plugs, there won't be any resistance from compression. Take off the alternator cover (left side) and you should be able to turn the rotor by hand.

What do you think about a Yamaha FZ6 for my first street bike.?

Click it up into 3rd gear & roll'er forward

I have a 1980 kaw650 it has a DYNAS elect. ignition w/3 wires and i dont know how they connect?

Yeah You Could Run threw the gears wile you push it. And if the rear tire spins with a little resistance it is turning over, you will hear some noise too, Also if the motor is out or in you could take the mag cover off and spin it over by hand.

Remove spark plugs, put on center stand (or get rear wheel off ground somehow), put in high gear, rotate rear tire.

Is there any Triumph motorcycle owner club in Northern NJ?

Are you sure you got the year and model # correct. Honda stopped making CB500s in the '70s.
If the bike your looking at doesn't have a drive chain or a working clutch, you won't be able to test it by putting in gear and pushing.
Remove the left crankcase cover (it's about 4-6" in diameter).
Turn the crankshaft by turning the center bolt.

Which do you like better, the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 (custom) or the Suzuki M50 Boulevard?

Wheel it BACKWARDS not forwards. Second gear works ok. it should turn over if its going to Going forward is more likely to make wheel slide as it unloads, going backwards loads more weight onto tyre
