Motorcycle: How do you shift smoothly from 2nd to 1st without shaking and vice versa?

Question:
I recently took the MSF course (motorcycle safety course) and passed. It only certifies riding in a parking lot, lol. I am having difficulty shifting from 2nd to 1st, then stopping; and also with shifting from 1st to 2nd smoothly. I think it's the throttling....but not sure.

wow thanks forr the responses to my quarry?

When upshifting let off the gas just a little bit,not all the way, between gears. When downshifting pull in the clutch and blip the throttle a little, then hit first gear.I think you are letting off the gas all the way is the problem you are experiencing. All this has to happen very quick, so experiment a little and you will get the hang of it.

You have to release the clutch slowly. Real slow... and do that AS you accelerate at the same speed.

It only comes from practice.

You never mentions if it was a new motorcycle or an older model.
Most motorcycles have a "gap" between 1st and 2nd gear which is neutral. The shifting should be smooth going into and out of 1st gear and visa versa shift into and out of 2nd. The most likely cause of your "jerky' shifting is the clutch. Make sure it is adjusted properly. If it's too tight the shifting will be jerky and if it's too loose, will make for hard shifting (almost like the gear shifter is jamming)
Also preload the shift. That's where you apply pressure to the shifter before pulling in the clutch and shifting. That will help the "dog ears" on the gear slip into place easier. It was a common problem on the K series CB750 Honda's.
Hope this helps.

OLD motorcycle question HELP?

I think that you might have a clutch problem or something out of adjustment. That can happen.

when coming to a stop, i don't shift from 2 to 1, i hold my clutch after 2, until i am fully stopped, then i shift to 1.

How to set timing on 95 Honda TRS 300EX four-Wheeler?

There are many different ways to smoothly/properly downshift, i know of 2: The first way is to simply pull in the clutch, downshift to first and SMOOTHLY ease the clucth out, you have to feel the engine and smoothly ease the clucth out. As you ease the clucht out, you will feel that the bike will begin to slow down or "engine brake" as you might like to call it. Remember you have to pull in the clucth, make the downshift and then EASE the clucth out.

The second way to smoothly make the downshifts is a more experienced form and is used when you are moving faster and want to slow down quick and smoothly without making the bike make a harsh jolt or snap. For the second way you have to blip the throttle to macth the engine speed with how fast you are actually going.

Here is a link that will better inform you on the technique, but just remember that you will not learn this overnight and that it takes practice. The link above also takes you to a website that has many articles on riding skills that will definitely help a new rider. Practice makes perfect, but dont practice on a street with other cars, find a place with enough space to practice riding techniques, such as a track.

Why is it that some motorbikes consume much energy than other bikes?

The rule of thumb when shifting is to match the speed of the gears, for example, if you are cruising at 50 mph and you downshift to 3rd, most likely the bike will lurch because 3rg gear usually has an approximate range of 25 to 35 mph.

what do you think of the kawasaki zx 14?

!st gear has a range of 0 to 15 or 20 mph, you normally don't ride on first gear because first gear is so low that it is mostly meant to just get the bike moving from a full stop, as soon as you get moving you shift to 2nd.

does any one knows hows to change an pocket bike 2 stroke engine to an 4 stroke?

Basically you tale off, while the engine is still revving, let go the gas and at the same time press the clutch all the way quickly, shift to second (now here comes the tricky part) as soon as you move the shift lever, slowly let go off the clutch and apply gas, just like when you take off the bike from a full stop, only that now you are moving.

When downshifting you should not downshift to 1st, that gear is too low and you might actually damage the gearbox, the only times you place it on 1st is when you are stopped, or if you are going under 3mph, in the later let go off the clutch very slowly.
