If you work for a harley dealership you can get anywhere from 16 to 30 an hour if you have a degree from MMI. An independent shop usually pays less than that. You may wanna check your local want adds to get an idea of mechanics vs job avalibility & pay scale.
Yamaha xj600N Exhaust issues. weld?? or new ??
ask the repairmen at all the local shops, NOT the managers. Websites are going to give you a rosy image, and you should want the truth. Dealerships only pay the least they can get away with for new wrenchmonkeys. They pay the good ones they need just enough to keep them from checking the competition, usually in perks- a deal on a customer's trade-in, tickets to a race, etc.If a shop charges $75/hr, new guys may make 9 or 10 on the clock, and the top guys may get $15-20/hr by the book. If they finish a job the book says takes 6.5 hours in 3, they still get credit for 6.5, but if they mess up and take 10 getting it right, still 6.5. Whoever makes the shop the biggest profit each month may get a kickback under the table, depending on how honest the dealership is.
Do you think young bikers are increasing the rate of road accidents?
Find a tech school (MMI, or some such...) and ask _them_ about the types of wages you could expect to make right out of school.Like anything else, you ace the course, you'll end up with a decent entry-level position. You wages go up with time at the job (you become more valuable to the dealer...)

You may end up working one place a few years, then move to bigger and better elsewhere.

Harley mechanics made more than others, still do, that is decreasing with foreign sale increasing. Premodonna harley guys will have to learn how to work on all bikes. A good mechanic can fix anything, not bolt chrome on. a good starting pay would be about 20 hr.There is a huge difference is wages around the U.S. A great way to check out what is paid is to go to http://www.ajb.org and do a nationwide search for open jobs with motorcycle as the search term. This is the government run site and is free to use.
I think my bike is flooded. Motorcycle help.?
If you are staying in your area then go to all the shops and just ask. If you are still in high school try and get a summer job at a shop to make sure you will like it. That's how I started.
On average Harley mechanics will make more money. Their dealers charge more for service. You will make more in a larger city. If you can weld, paint and do custom work you will make much more.

ATV Motor Oil API service label question: can I use SM in place of SG, SH, or SJ?
It depends how good you are.Starting out you could expect anywhere from $6.50 to $12.00 hr, depending on area of country and time of year
Experienced, $25.00 ~$40.00 hr or more on a good day, but its pretty hard to work at that level all the time.
Even on a good day you actually only do about 7 hrs work, the rest of the time is spent getting parts, moving bikes, dealing with customers, etc
