both are wrong. point up is for the main tank. point down for the reserve. if u ride with the point down all the time, when the bike quits from lack of fuel, u'll be walking. always run on the main tank. use reserve only as a way to get to a gas station as the reserve wont hold very much.
be advised, fuell injected bikes have no reserve....when u run out, u walk.
