I had a friend ride it home for me and he's parked it in my garage. Of course I'm out there marvelling at its beauty every few minutes, and naturally want to start her up and listen to the grumble. So the first time I tried...sat on the bike lifted the jiffy, pulled out the "enricher knob" and 'started' her up. bloody hell it takes off. I figure my friend has not stopped it in neutral?? I was speaking to him yesterday and he said to sit on the bike, try and push it forwards whilst holding the clutch and try and get in into neutral. This doesn't seem to be working for me. Is there an easy way to find neutral on this bike?
Please help if you have any suggestions... I'm dieing to start her up!

Keep the ignition turned off. Sit on the bike, and don't touch the clutch (the handle on the left handlebar).1992 kawasaki bayou...any good?
Roll the bike forward, gently. If it won't roll, gently work the shift lever (left foot), down, just a snick, and try it again. If it doesn't roll, repeat three or four times. Now you know you're in first gear.

Now, just barely tap the shift lever UP. If you tap too hard, you'll end up in second gear. It's easiest to see when you're actually rolling a little (just a foot is all you need). Just gently down with that shift lever, until you're not getting any feel; then up half a snick.

Start with your owners manual. Usually tap down 4 times, then with your big toe under shifter lift up a hair while gently rocking the motorcycle frontwards and backwards till you here a click.down down down down down half way up

Hold in the clutch. Lift the shift lever slightly. You will almost feel it go into neutral. Let the clutch go, roll it forward. If it rolls with the clutch out, you're in neutral.A green light on the speedo will appear when it's in neutral and the bike will roll freely. If not, click down on the shifter with the clutch lever pulled in until it won't click anymore and then gently feel your way up half a click. Slight rocking back and forth while doing this may help. It is a learn by touch process.

Don't ever assume a bike is in neutral when starting up. Always sit on the bike and make sure it is(part of the HD getting started video that comes with the bike that you didn't watch). My girlfriend did the same thing on her first try on a Sportster after riding sportbikes. Seems like Harley riders always leave their bikes in gear and sportbike riders leave them in neutral. Hmmmmm..

Get some training and for your own sake wear a real helmet, gloves and jacket! If you can't even get the thing into neutral you are going down for sure when you try to ride it. Tap, tap , tap all the way down, then 1/2 click up . **** Your friend told you right , you may have to rock the bike forward and back enough to take pressure off the belt while putting light upward pressure on the shift lever,***** It's not about how HARD you push the shifter, find neutral delicately!
Yikes... take the MSF course if you haven't, and you might wanna buy a cheap 250cc bike to learn on, you're sure to have a hard time trying to learn on that HD, and probly a hardtime staying alive... a 1200cc is never good for a beginner.

Over 50% of all first time riders that crash do so in their first year, and 80% of those have NEVER ahd any type of formal training.
I suggest you sign up and take an MSF class before you kill yourself. Motorcycles are not cars; they do not operate like cars, they do not handle like cars, and if you still have a car-driving mindset you will die.

Do take a rider training course http://www.msf-usa.org/ they have small, inexpensive bikes that you will learn on. If you drop it, the only thing you'll hurt is your ego.

Riding a bike is not like driving a car - there's so much to learn all at once, you can't learn well on the road with other vehicles. Take a course with teachers that know exactly what you're going through, and how to get you on the road and enjoying that neat new bike ASAP, and for many years to come!
