Either a Honda CG 125 or Yamaha SR125. Theres loads of them around so they're pretty cheap to buy, parts are readily available and they are a basic single cylinder 4 stroke engine. Reliable but then easy to fix if they do go wrong or get damaged.who Manufactured the "Ariel Sq. Four"?

My very first bike was a Yamaha DT125. It has been rated as the BEST learner bike ever and I will vouch for that. It is a stylish trail bike with raised mud guards and knobbly tyres and can reach sppeds of about 60-65 mph.
Brand new they cost around £2.500- £3.000 and passing my CBT1 on it was a breeze.

If its just to learn on for a few months, dont blow too much money; even consider a cheap (and i do mean CHEAP in every sense of the word) Chinese replica like the HN or GY. You can pick these up brand new for under £600 on eBay.

if you are after a second hand bike go for a bandit 600 cc.
this may seem big being a 600cc motorbike,when i first past my test i rode a 1200 cc bandit,i was absolutely amazed of the ease to ride,they are very comfortable sit up bikes.
most people will know that it is much more difficult to ride a 125 cc bike than it is to ride a 600 cc.
let me try explain in another way.
I'm a owner driver,i have a 26 ton truck and a 1 ton car,which is easy-est to drive............? well its the truck, why power steering better visibility, bigger mirrors,its the same for a bike,neither can anyone else explain why,with a 125 cc bike from time to time if you are a rider you will have come in some tricky position,with a 600 cc bike there easier to get out of,granted bigger bike more weight,but that's what make you more comfortable,weight.
trust me on this and you will see.
take one for a test ride,you have to be riding for more than 2 years.
This is a very difficlut thing to explain,just talk to others that ride bikes.

It doesn't matter much. The best combination of things would be under 250cc, 4 stroke engine and low enough seat that your feet stand flat on the pavement when you come to a full stop. Lights and controls that work readily are a plus as well...and a good teacher! Keep the wheels down and the helmet up...why is the layout on the SV650S so bad?
Are you a learner? Go for an SR125 or a honda cg125. Both reliable and rider friendly. For a bigger bike maybe a Suzuki GS500 or a Kawazaki ER5 or Honda CB500. These will be fairly cheap, reliable and not too lethal if your ridings a bit ropey. I'd be a bit wary of them cheap chinese Honda 125 copies.
