A good option after you get past your learning stage would be an ST1300. They are fast, you can have fun in corners and they are great for long distance. Granted it is no liter bike in the corners and its no Gold Wing full tour but it is the best amalgam. There are others in this class that are good bikes too.

What are you going to do on it? If you are going to commute to work every day, get a cruiser it will save your a s s!
If, on the other hand, you just wanna have fun on weekends, go sport.
Also, for me -I'm 6'3" & 340 lbs, a cruiser is the way to go. If you weigh less than 200, not so much of a problem. Finally, get a bike you can stand-up if it is tipped over. Cruisers are heavy.

Gixx has got it on this one. Start out with a cruiser first then work up to something faster/sportier. You have to be able to ride before you can race.

I drive my car like a maniac. I'm an ex-NYC cabdriver. I ride my motorcycle to relax. I can ride all day comfortably on my Intruder 1400. I don't want to ride my bike like a bat out of hell either and find myself slowing down to relax and enjoy the ride. The truth of the matter is that my Intruder is pretty quick compared to any car.

I have a 76 shovelhead that will run fine until I shut it off for a few minutes. It then wil pop thru the carb

well for learning i would buy a dirt bike first. This is a excellent way to see how to work the clucth and braking systems. Also the dirt bike will help you to keep your balance in varying conditions. I think my expedience and the dirt bike was invaluable when i bought my first bike wich is a sport bike a Rc51 honda and i love it i was ready for everything the road threw at me. See safe riding can't really be taught you have to have experience. Wind, traffic, rain are all very diffent on a bike then in a car. But when move to street bike i would buy a sport bike. Only because the brakes are way better and u can turn much more easily when u get used to leaning witch can be akward at first.

A sport is alright for around town or short trips within a few hours, not comfortable for a long ride.

Cruiser is good for around town or the long trip, the most comfortable next to the tour bike like a goldwing.

What exactly is the difference between the Kawasaki 250F and the Yamaha 250F?

cruiser, do you like to ride all day, or just short trips around town. sport is for short trips, some people say the ride them all day, long miles but not half as easy as a cruiser, and you can still cruise around town short trips.

Is this a good first bike?

For your first bike I'd get a "plain vanilla" "standard" motorcycle, something really basic. Then see what you think. If you get more into the performance and handling side of things (FAST), then you later on can go into sport bikes. If you like to just putz around town and "be seen" , then a cruiser. If you like going fast and taking longer trips, several hours at a time, then a sport-touring. If you like the long trips but no thrill out of speed or cornering fast, then a regular touring bike, ie a "bagger' or GoldWing style bike.
