My cusin has an 85 Yamaha FJ1200. When he rides for a while then jumps on it, it starts crapping out on him. When he gets it home and diconnects the fuel line from the tank, then lets it run untill the carbs run out of fuel, then hooks the fuel line back up, turnes on the gas and runs it again it is ok untill he rides again for a while and jumps on it. Remove and clean the fuel tank. Also check the vent on the gas cap. ( open the cap while it is running bad,) if it gets better in a couple seconds you found it. Most bikes of that vintage need the fuel system rebuilt.replace the in line fuel filter, and then replace the fuel screen in the carb.

1.Replace the fuel filter & screen
2.Rebuild the carb. the float maybe sticking from sitting with bad gas in it, called Varnishing.
3.Remove the Gas tank and remove the fuel pet-****, clean the tank with varisol or kerosene, dry it and inspect for rust.
4.Check any vacume lines, if any
5.Replace the Air filter, in case it has hidden blockage.
This should clear up any fuel issues, if this does not fix it, then move to the electrical system.
Check that the fuel cap is venting also.
