Question:
I am a prospective buyer of a 2007 Yamaha V Star 650 Classic, and on Yanswers I hear a lot of talk about the bike requiring a lot of maintenance, and old school methods of doing so. Can I get some feedback from actual owners instead of people who flipped through the user manual? Thanks!

Motorcycle lowering links: Do longer links lower or raise a motorcycle?
What is probably being referred to is the antiquated design of the engine. It's air cooled, has external oil lines and the maintenance schedule calls for valve adjustments every 4K miles or so.How do I put my motorcycle on its built in center stand?
The only problem we've experienced is just plain silly, and comes down to another poor design issue and 'know-it-all' riders. On the 650 the clutch releases *really* late at the lever. I.E. the lever will be almost all the way out before the clutch even hints at engaging. For the average rider this is disconcerting. For the newbie it's, well, dangerous, in my opinion. The average poser rider/back yard mechanic will immediately try to 'adjust' the clutch cable and just screw things up. Sometimes to the point that premature clutch wear, even failure occurs.
On a few of the 'Custom' models we've seen front brake chatter. The 'old school' spoke wheels tend to have the spokes loosen up in the first 1K miles or so. The brake issue is just how the pads sit in the caliper after some wear, and the spokes, well, welcome to the world of 'wire wheels'. Again, just a design issue that is pretty much normal for that type of design. Once they have been re-tightened they are seldom an issue. Unless of course the same rube that adjusted the clutch tries to tighten the spokes and gets the wheel(s) out of true...
What size engine is an 883 sportster i know a 1200 is a 1200 dont know what they consider an 883!!?

Go to the "V Star C, C, & D" forum and you will learn lots from V Star owners.. My 2000 model is trouble free, gets 50 MPG, and shaft drive makes for low mantainence.. Good Luck.Exhaust system (stainless steel) for Honda XR125 motorbike 2006?
search for the STAR riders forum online. They have good answers...Hi, I'm 18 and looking for a 250cc bike. any suggestions?
The guy making the comment about the 883.what a joke of a bike. He is trying to get you to buy a maintenance pig, a great bike for the "wife".she wont ride it hard,so it wont 't break down on you!
Pulsar150cc Vs Apache Which is the perfect bike..??
The reason for the higher maintenance on the 650 is due to all the hard riding people do on a smaller cc bike. Honestly a 650 is literally only meant for very short trips and around town riding. You can take it longer destination trips, but you will be winding the motor out the entire way. This is why so much maintenance is required.
I know the V-Star 1100 is a great bike with less maintenance.
If you buy an 07...my recommendation for a newer rider is to invest in the dealers pre-paid maintenance program and use it. Almost all dealers offer this and it really is worth the money. They will negotiate on the price a bit to. I wouldn't worry so much about extending the warranty as i would the maintenance agreement.
What experiment occurred that involved military and motorcycles in the early 1900's to mid 1900's?
good luck and have fun...oh yeah.. the 650 will get incredibly good gas mileage and the motor as been known to last over 100k miles.ask any Harley rider if this is possible on their precious American bikes..the answer is definitely NO!!
Improper 'maintenance' can be worse than no maintenance at all. There are still some shade tree mechanics out there who haven't learned anything new since the 1960's.
Make sure your dealer's mechanics are factory trained, and follow their recommendations, and you should have no problems.
Oh... Don't be too concerned about the horror stories you read on many special interest forums. Those forums seem to be the place where every disgruntled owner, or ex-owner comes to vent, but you never hear from the hundreds of happy owners who would rather be out riding!
