i got the mc permit first, then the bike and put insurance and plates on the bike. the permit will allow u with some restrictions that u will be advised of when ur permit is validated, to ride on the street. rules vary from state to state, but using ohio as an example, permit riders are not allowed to: ride 2-up(carry passengers), cant ride at night, on interstates, in very congested areas, and must wear a helmet. after u get ur full endorsement in ohio, u are still required to wear a helmet for the 1st year after.u can go take the msf class either before or after the bike. the msf class will be using the same sized engine (250cc or under). but u still have to have a valid mc permit before u are able to ride any of the msf bikes.
as long as the bike is no more than 500cc's, u can bring ur own bike on the beginner's course. when i first tried to get into the msf course, i had a 750cc yamaha; lookin over the materials, the bike was 'too big' for the beginner course.
on the advanced rider course, u bring ur own bike, but before u take it, they want u to have had at least 6 months saddle time in first.

If you have no experience riding a motorcycle on the street, you should take a training course. Doing this will also get you your license endorsement. If you don't take riding seriously on the street you could very well end up dead. You have to watch everything, and be a defensive driver. I love bikes, but I also respect the fact that they offer zero protection. Be smart. Don't wear shorts and a tee shirt. Don't be a loser. At least wear pants, boots, and a leather jacket. You should always wear gloves. so that when you wipe out you won't grind your hands down to the bone when you try to catch your fall. Sorry to be so morbid but bikes are serious s--t. get the bike ,,,,,,,,,,, and the license endorsement at the same time.... a training class is highly recommended,, most will provide a bike or let you use your own... which will build your confidence.. and make your insurance cheaper.. mine was only 200 a year <full coverage> on a 2006 model harley.. of course the younger you are . it may be higher.. good luck....taking a pillion for the first time...?
