on rainy days my BMW 75RT sometimes dies. I leave it for approx 20mins and it will start, all be it erratically. The next day it will start no problem. The bike seems to work ok in the dry.

I had much the same problem with my r80rt in the end I replaced the ignition coil and that did the trick turned out to be cracked and previous owner had just pumped loads of wd40 into it a good place to get a new one is Motorworks phone 0845 584077 or go on line to http://www.motorworks.co.uk/bmw/home.php... One of the waterproof connections in the ignition circuit--or, if the bike has fuel injection, it could be there, too--is leaking.And, it is a connection that is affected by the heat coming off the engine, so I'd start troubleshooting with that in mind. Best of luck.

i highly doubt moisture in the actuall plugs,but id say it is moisture causing one of the plug wires or coil wire to arch and makeing the plug or plugs not fire correctly..The coil could do this also if its going bad and gets wet..Do as the mike suggest wet the engine down and start it or crank it in complete darkness and look for a blue spark jumping around..the wires are most likely the problem..I would suggest changing the plugs while i was at it..How would i find out about a 1978 honda motorcycle?
Believe it or not, the WD in WD40 stands for "water displacement" and if you have problems with water getting into your spark plug wires, keep a small can of WD40 on your bike and spray the plug caps with it the next time it happens. IF it cures the problem then you know it is with the plug wires. If this does not cure the problem, then take it to someone who really knows BMW electrical systems and find out where the exposed short/wiring is by someone who knows how to find it. Something as simple as a wet ignition wire can be difficult to find without proper testing equipment, unless you get lucky and just happen to see it. It could be any where on your wiring harness, but check where wires are prone to rubbing against other parts, like the steering head, in the headlight bucket, below the seat, etc. Get yourself a wiring diagram for your bike too! This will help you follow the wiring, and know which wires are most likely to effect your ignition system. Just as a question, does it ever happen to short out your lighting? If it does, then there might be a wire to look for between the handle bars and the headlight bucket. But, without being there, it's pretty hard to make anything more than an educated guess.aw the old boxer has a problem huh? this was sadly a problem with them. and i bet you need to replace your coil. thats probally all there is to it. Sounds electrical. Start with the cheap stuff first. Replace your ignition wires. As long as you have the spark plugs exposed, replace them too. Apply a small amount of silicone dialectric grease to the boots before you reinstall them. This will help removing the boots the next time, and aid in keeping moisture out. Available at almost any auto parts store.When / if that doesn't solve the problem, do what the guy above me said. Replace the coil / coils. He apparently owns a BMW and has specific knowledge that I don't since I don't own a BMW. He's probably more right. LOL!! I go for the cheap stuff first.
