I have the cylinder completely removed, but am having problems with removing the piston from the push rod, I have removed the pins on each side. Now what do I do from there, I dont want to hurt the rod bearings, so I thought I'd ask before I force it out.

Replace the rod/crank berings they are increadibly cheap.. you went this far... its silly not to.. just dont forget to mic em right..

Generally what you can do is get a wood dowel.Take the clips off the wrist pins..take a mallet and tap the wrist pins out using the wooden dowel. The pins should come out pretty easy. Then remove the pistons.

take a rag or something similar to protect the pistons from getting scratched by the cylinder studs , remove wristpins , wrap rag around studs or piston then you can use a medium extension 3/8 drive .. start tapping until wristpin comes out far enough to clear rod then remove piston..Are Harley Davidson's unreliable?
Its a connecting rod and you have circlips on the ends of the piston pin. Frequently they form small burrs in piston which causes pin to stick. You could try de-burring with a sharp knife. You should tap it out with a hammer. The steel wrist pin is usually a tight fit inside the aluminum piston. Once it gets moving, it should break free. Be carefull that you dont push the connecting rod side ways. If you damage the connecting rod, you may have to buy it as a whole crank/rod assembly. If its on a 2 stroke dirtbike, watch out for that first answer. You wont find screws on the connecting rod. They utilize all of their air space. You usually need a 10ton press to split the crankshaft halves apart to remove the connecting rod.
