anyone ever ride from ny to sturgis south dakota? been out there twice already but i trailered my bike out, this year i'm going to try to make 1700 miles in two days on a custom chopped harley. just wondering if anyone has riden that many miles in two days and if so how was it?

If its a softtail its possible, if its a rigid, you will be pissing blood by the end of the ride. That is too much shock for the kidneys. Most people I know can maybe do 300 miles on a rigid in a day. I have easily gone 1000+ a day on a Goldwing. Don't plan on any backroads, stick to the interstates, stop approx. every 100 miles for gas, bathroom & a snack. Keep the stops to 10 minutes. Carry water and snacks to eat, no time for long food stops. Last year, I went from LA to Sturgis (1392 miles) in about 22 hrs. In order to make 1700 miles in two days, you'd have to ride 850 miles a day. That works out to 13.07 hours NON-STOP at a speed of not less than 65 MPH. Of course, you'll have to stop for gas and butt breaks; then there's the inevitable traffic that you're going to run into, and stopping for meals. Being conservative, add at least two hours to this time, bringing your total travel time to 15.07 hours PER DAY. And that's being conservative...it will probobly take you longer than that.Don't forget to add in that you'll be making the ride on a bike that doesn't sound like it's built for long-distance travel; that will increase the frequency of your butt-breaks.
If I were you, I'd plan on the trip out being at least three days.

The question isn't if others can do it, the question is if you can. I've twice done 4000 miles in 5 days on a Honda Goldwing and have done some 500 mile days on a TourGlide. Do you trust the bike? What's the farthest you've ridden in a day on it? I'd take a couple of short trips, maybe 500 or 600 miles first to see if you can tolerate it. Choppers are usually made to look good riding around the block. They aren't normally all that comfortable on a long haul. 1700 miles on a Custom Do tell!most of them i have seen, 100 miles is a stretch, since they are so poorly designed, as a rule. Generally this type of bike is designed to trick drunk women onto the back for a 5 min ride to either a bar or the owners home. IF you manage this distance without some aftermarket part failing, or some poor labor practice causing a failure, your gonna have monkey butt so bad your not gonna be able to troll and look cool at the Tshirt extravaganza. I suggest you trailer your useless trinket, and then you can pretend to be a biker at sturgis, same as all the other janitors, and used car salesman posing in similar form. Good Luck!

I've ridden 960 miles from Beaumont, Texas to Deming New Mexico in 16 hours on an '81 Honda CB750F. And 1,000 miles in 24 hours on an '06 Yamaha R1. But I can't imagine doin' that on a Harley. i agree with mike l, i have ridden 5100 miles in 7 days on my goldwing. nearly all custom choppers are made for show not long distance as most have small fuel tanks uncomfortable seating and most have poor lights.Anyone know a good website for finding motorcycles for sale?
