Most street bikes currently are manual shift ... however in time might have more "street bike" models with automatic transmissions in future. The last few years has had a boon of offerings from top manufacturer offering more real life version scooters that are auto shift, offers more power for getting around town or highway in all lanes. These are more the lines of the Honda Silver Wing boasting 580cc of scooter go power. Some owners I've talked with has got up to 110mph, although I wouldn't recommend such speeds. Yet enough power to keep you sanely flowing along the highway if need be, and definitely cruising around town while lightly sipping fuel. They also have a Reflex scooter that has 250cc scooter power for zipping around town at a comfortable pace. Yamaha also offers their Majesty with a 500cc motor. Also their Morpheus with a 250cc motor. Either way, you get the feel of two wheels freedom without all the machismo worry of shifting gears on a motorcycle. However, the price tag on these models can cost more than a decent & recent used manual motorcycle. Whatever your choice, when it comes to two wheels ... ride sane, ride safe. Cars don't notice scooters just as much as they don't notice motorcycles on the streets. No matter how safe you ride. I would also recommend taking a motorcycle safety riding class ... it can offer you skill techniques for riding safety and your insurance might give you a discount for it. ridley makes oneWhat is a good beginner's motorcycle?
Yes, there are. There area few available today, and the CVT (continously variable) transmission has gone under quite a bit of development in the past few years, so there will probably be more in the future. You can get 150- 500cc scooters today with automatic CVT transmisisons, like the Aprilia Scarabeo, Honda Silverwing, and the Honda Helix. Yamaha has a push-button electric shift transmission on the FJR1300, but that is a little bigger than what you are looking for. Honda has a concept motorcycle under development with one that may be out soon. Ridley and BossHoss have automatic bikes currently. Ridley is a pretty small cruiser, BossHoss is HUGE.
