Yes! This style of bike is very well balanced. The 400 is not a huge engine, so it is not too much power for a beginner but enough to last you while. If it's in runable condtion, has all it's pieces, then the Yammie XS400 is a great bike. It doesn't make enough HP to knock itself apart., and will run forever with little maintenance.Be aware that parts are difficult to get, and service is impossible.
But the fun aspect is pretty cool.

i bought one about 2 years ago that had been sitting under a shed for years.it had only 4400 miles on it.rebuilt the carbs,changed the frount wheel,cleaned gas tank,put in a new battery,and i was ridin'.yes it is a good bike for a beginner,but some would say a little too big.just be real careful at first(she'll pull the frount wheel between first and second gear if you get on the gas hard.it has been a fun bike to ride the 5000 or so miles i've put on her.but gets a little cramped on long trips,or with another rider.
