Just use the correct one, it is not worth it to try and be cheap here. 77 sportsters have enough electrical problems without adding an incorrect battery to the mix. Theoretically, yes you can use any 12 volt battery, but too big or too small of a battery will most likely cause problems. The charging system on that bike is not very good and will set you back a couple of grand to fix, do not piss it off!

i have a 1979 xlh sportster 1000 i have just a standard 12 volt motorcycle battery on mine i dont understand what u mean by (one of those large batteries) u can only fit a small battery in the compartment where the battery goes just go to ur local parts store to a car parts or motorcycle shop tell them the year and size and they will set u up fpr only about $30
