My wife and I are looking for a couple scooters just to ride around for fun. They won't be used heavily. We just want a "grown up toy". My wife has owned a honda scooter before and loved it. I have never been on one. I recently saw at Pep Boys they have a Baja SC50 49cc scooter for $799. It seems like it has lots of options, but then again, I have never owned one so . . . Check out the forums at www.scootdawg.com and www.scooterbbs.com . In these forums the general consensus is do not buy from an on-line source as you will probably receive very little in the way of warranty, parts, or service. You will be better off finding an established dealer (IE one with a real building and parts on hand). I know Pep Boys is an established national chain, but, I have read a few horror stories regarding their scooter sales. In a few instances people had trouble with their scooters and Pep Boys won't work on them, they just give you the phone number of the manufacturer and it was an endless case of phone tag and frustration. I have nothing against inexpensive or Chinese scooters, mostly likely for your intended use they will be just fine, and if you are somewhat mechanically inclined all the better. I don't know where you are, but, there are many fine established dealers who will ship to you and give you service afterward. Top speed is around 30-35 mph. Perhaps I've been lucky, but other than routine maintenance, the only significant issue has been with the turn signal switch.

I bought the exact same scooter at Pep Boys on March 21st. The scooter is working perfectly so far...and it is strong enough to ride 2 people. The top speed on flat ground is 30 mph. I only use it around my neighborhood as a toy and I have driven it 80 miles so far.
