the shell of the helmet holds the foam to your head...so that when you hit something the impact is "reduced".the shell dosnt do a lot of impact absorbing.so isnt as important as the foam...BUT...weakening the shell can be a problem.I have an old leather jacket and over the years it has shrunken signifigantly...?

i have scratches from pebbles and small stones on my lid from the cagers kicking em up. scratches should be the least of ur worries. no1 will be inspecting ur lid while ur on the fly.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. But, I have always been told that dropping a helmet pretty much makes it useless. Something about the impact foam inside and that when it impacts (like a drop from the bike) it changes or expands or something. I could be wrong, but I have just always been told that dropping the helmet makes it useless... <shrug>.. I'd like to hear responses myself to this.How do I take out the airbox on a 2001 Honda F4i?
dropping a forty dollar helmet will not hurt it. It was worthless when you bought itI have a 49.7cc scooter,putperformancecdi unit on, does this mean i have to run a hotter plug?
Just remember, once a helmet is dropped, it may never offer the same level of protection again. ABS helmets are sometimes O.K., but fiberglass substrate helmets can be compromised. Find out what the helmet is made of. If it is fiberglass, consider the damage and whether it should be replaced.That being said, I have used BBQ black Krylon spray bombs before to fix cosmetic blems in flat black helmets. Works pretty well.
I just wouldnt worry about it as long as the helmet is not damaged so as it doesnt protect your head. You should feel the helmet for any obvious bubbles to the exterior and you should also not be able to squash the helmet if you compress it between your knees. It shouldnt move at all. (Tips from hubby who has acted as scrutineer for national motocross events)
A lot of bike helmets are only made of plastic and dont offer enough protection. It is not always necessary to buy the most expensive helmet to get one that offers protection, but you have to ask the right questions. Lots of kids helmets are not worth even bothering about as they would just cave in in a bad stack.
